Little Lady is a little monkey and climbs anything she can hoist her chubby little knees up on. This is not a bad skill, but it is difficult to find appropriate and safe places for her to climb. One day while Mini Me was at preschool I decided to try the old idea of pulling the furniture cushions to the floor and letting her have at it.
Once our living room was turned into a cushion gym complete with furniture cushions, our fluffiest pillows, and some blankets to fill in the gaps, I brought Little Lady in to have her go to town. I truly thought she would enjoy this for most of the morning.
For about three minutes, she bopped, climbed, grunted, and scooted around.
Then the whines started. So, I climbed right in the middle with her. We rolled and tickled and danced to the music blasting on our Pandora station.
Three minutes later, the whines started again. I thought she might be thirsty from the six minutes of fun, so we took a break for a drink of cold water, then back to the gym.
A very short time later, the grumbly grumpies set in. These are more intense than the whines. So, we tried a diaper change and came back.
One roll over a cushion and real tears came. It was almost lunch time so we just had an early lunch and then went back to the cushion gym. As you can tell, I was bound and determined for the little monkey to like this, darn it, and I was not going to give up.
By this time, Daddy had stopped home from work and that always cheers her up. With a fresh diaper, a good lunch in her belly, some glee from a snuggle with Daddy, plus a fun leftover birthday balloon to bop around, I thought we were golden.
Not so much.
The cushions were quickly picked up and Little Lady proceeded to walk around the house with a monkey finger puppet mashed in one hand, and my hand tightly squeezed in the other until it was time to get Mini Me from preschool.
Maybe we'll try the cushion gym another day. See that optimistic determination? I just know she will love it....

That's how it always is! You think of an activity your children are sure to love....and then they totally do not!
ReplyDeleteYour story made me laugh. My great ideas don't always go as planned either. Though the best part is that she'll probably LOVE it the next time you try. :)
ReplyDeleteAwe. Poor baby. She refused to enjoy my children's most favorite activity in the world!
ReplyDeleteI love this story. Thanks for sharing one of those fantastic ideas that didn't turn out like you expected. Some days it seems like we have so many of them!
