Making rainbow gelatin is a fun treat - and a great, edible way to talk about the colors of the rainbow, in order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple (I know, I know... indigo, violet). I recently made this when we had friends visit.
It is not difficult or time consuming but it takes a long span of time to complete because you have to keep waiting for each layer to set. Also, since you are essentially making 12 boxes of gelatin, you have to make it in multiple pans so there is room for it all and the gelatin stack doesn't grow too tall in one dish!
I started with red on the bottom, but you could start with purple on the bottom and go through the order the other way.
By the time we got to green and blue, Mini Me was interested in helping.
The final product is so pretty! By doing one layer of the gelatin color with water, then one layer of the color mixed with Carnation, it gives a lovely layered rainbow effect.
Getting the first slice out is always messy and ugly so I dug that one out before our friends arrived and had myself a little taste test... yum!
Rainbow Gelatin
12 (3 oz) boxes of gelatin in rainbow colors
2 cherry
2 apricot
2 lemon
2 lime
2 blueberry
2 grape
3 small cans of Carnation instant milk
Grease 8x8 or 9x13 pans. This recipe makes a ton of gelatin so you'll have to split it between two or more pans. If you put it in Tupperware or another clear dish, you can see the pretty layers. Begin well ahead of time to make sure each layer sets. It takes me two full days to get it finished.
Mix 1 box cherry with 3/4 c hot water, then 3/4 c cold water. Pour in pans, refrigerate, and let set.

Repeat for all the colors and enjoy!

I'm thinking about doing this for the preschool class at our church. September is the month they'll be learning about Noah, I just have to decide if I'm patient enough to make some as nicely as your turned out! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteJen, I think that would be a fun idea! It takes a long span of time, but it's not difficult. It would be a great activity! This last time we made it and served it to company everyone from 1 to 50 enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteSo fun! I've seen this made before, but not with carnation. I think that has to make it extra tasty. My kids would gobble this. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! I can't wait to make this... it's so fun and festive!
