One day I decided Mini Me needed a fine motor skills challenge. I aimed to work on the good 'ol activity of sewing letters on a paper plate. With a pencil, you can punch holes in the plate that you can then thread with yarn.
Instead of just one letter, we tried Mini Me's entire name... on one plate... it turned out to be excellent small motor skills practice!
Mini Me helped me punch the holes with a pencil after we wrote his name. I wound some masking tape over the end of the yarn for a "needle" and we set to work.
What happened did not surprise me... along with the fine motor skills, we practiced some large motor skills, too. We made our length of yarn very long and our activity ended up with me holding the plate while we took turns poking the yarn through the front or back. When the yarn came through the front side of the plate, Mini Me would pull it through by crawling or scooting away from me until it was taught, then crawling or scooting back.
We did his entire name in one sitting! It was good team work and he concentrated so hard on poking that yarn through the hole. Maybe he'll want to learn how to sew like me some day!
